His Shadow

We are blessed to have a cabin on the river. During construction we decided to leave a small buffer between the cabin and the riverfront for privacy. We came to appreciate the buffer even more after our grandchildren started arriving; no child can resist a bluff bank and a swiftly flowing river… During a fall visit I brought our young grandson on a long stroll that brought us to a clearing a hundred yards or so upstream. The vista expanded towards the river. Unless they wander into harm’s way I usually give my grandchildren free reign to roam when we go strolling; I hang back a few paces to allow them freedom to explore. As soon as we exited the canopy into that clearing our inquisitive toddler immediately discovered his boldly outlined shadow. He was mesmerized! When he moved it moved! He ran and it ran! He jumped and it jumped… Laughter floated on the crisp breeze. Every antic brought him closer to a riverbank he hadn’t yet noticed. Yes, it’s a lesson!
I began thinking about the darkness of sin in our lives. How we often follow sin without even realizing it… How sin entertains us and adjusts to our daily walk… Unless we recognize the danger, that sin will lure us straight to destruction…
Before my grandson reached the riverbank, I corrected his path. We talked about the danger it presented then turned and left the shadow behind us. Our corrected path wasn’t as entertaining as that shadow.
Thankful this morning for the lessons that are all around us and that we have a Mighty GOD that is always present to nudge our hearts thus helping us to correct our paths and leave the shadows of sin behind. Even though I corrected my grandson’s path, I caught him looking back over his shoulder several times seeking that shadow. Yes, the shadow continued to follow him. Upon discovering it, my grandson turned back towards the shadow. I had to correct his path multiple times. Wow! Another lesson.
