The Anchor Holds

Our hometown of Jasper, Texas sits close enough to the southeastern border of our great state to make the drive to neighboring Louisiana an easy one. That means we also have quick access to some of the best light-tackle saltwater fishing the region has to offer.

On a recent trip, my husband and I visited Hackberry Rod and Gun, a lodge that’s been a favorite since its founding in 1975. It’s the gateway to Lake Calcasieu and her winding tidal marshes. After hearing countless stories from his hunting buddies, my husband booked us an overnight fishing trip in mid-April. I couldn’t help but wonder: would this place live up to its reputation?

Our adventure began with an early bedtime, as we were told to expect a knock on the door at 5 a.m. After a hearty breakfast and hot coffee, we met our captain and climbed aboard his center-console bay boat.  He piloted with his hip pressed against the steering wheel as he rigged our tackle to saltwater standards. By the time the spray settled, we were ready to fish.

The conditions were far from perfect—25 mph winds, cool temperatures, and a low mist hanging in the air. First-time experiences are rarely easy, but they are almost always memorable. And this trip was no exception.

We reeled in a fun variety of fish, along with a few “extras”—sticks, an old crab basket, discarded rope, and even a sneaky blue crab or two that helped themselves to our bait. Our captain battled the wind and currents with determination, making sure we squeezed every bit of enjoyment out of the day.

At one point, as we drifted toward a reedy flat, he said, “Let me set the anchor. Then I want you to cast just shy of the reeds.” He paused, then added, “The bottom here is soft. There’s not much for the anchor to grab. I just hope it will hold.”

Those words struck me deeper than he realized. Isn’t that the question we all face when the storms of life rise up against us—Will my anchor hold?

For me, the answer is always yes. Because Jesus is my anchor. Unlike the soft marsh bottom, He provides a sure and steady hold, no matter the storm.

Hebrews 6:19 reminds us:

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

So when the winds rage and the waters rise, I can rest in this truth—my Anchor holds. Will yours?
