Pinged

“Ping, ping, ping…” My cell phone chimed over and over. Someone was sending me a flurry of text messages. Curious, I tapped my screen—and instantly wished I hadn’t. A long, critical rant spilled across the display. Someone was very unhappy with me—or so it seemed.

A few lines in, I realized the truth: I was the accidental recipient of a message meant for someone else. I quickly typed, “Excuse me, I think you have the wrong person.” Seconds later, the sender sheepishly replied, “Sorry!”

Before deleting the thread, I skimmed back over the messages. To my surprise, even though they weren’t meant for me, a few lines hit uncomfortably close to home. Ouch. Conviction where I wasn’t expecting it!

It made me think about prayer and the way the Holy Spirit sometimes gets our attention. Has God ever “pinged” your heart with conviction so directly that your first response was, “Excuse me, Lord… You must have the wrong person!”?

I know I’ve sat through sermons nodding along in self-defense, secretly hoping the pastor was talking about someone else. Yet God’s Word never goes astray. Unlike misdirected texts, His messages always arrive exactly where they’re meant to land. He has our number memorized.

Hebrews 12:11 reminds us: “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Conviction may sting at first, but it’s proof of His love and His desire to see us grow.

And 2 Timothy 3:16 assures us: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” In other words, when God pings us through His Word, He’s not being critical—He’s training us for a life that reflects His righteousness.

So, the next time you feel that unexpected “ping” of conviction, don’t shrug it off or hope it was meant for someone else. Lean in, listen carefully, and thank God that He cares enough to send you the message directly.

After all, He never dials the wrong number.
