Is Your Survival Kit Ready?

In the world we live in, it’s easy to become fearful about catastrophic events. News reports remind us of power grids that could fail, food supplies that might be disrupted, or medical care that may not always be available. While it is wise to prepare — to have adequate food stores, to keep a flashlight handy, to plan for emergencies — there’s also the danger of letting fear consume us.
The Bible affirms the value of preparation. Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” Proverbs 6:6–8 reminds us of the ant, which “stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Being thoughtful and prepared is part of good stewardship.
But Scripture also reminds us that preparation without trust in God can lead to anxiety and misplaced security. Psalm 20:7 warns us, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Stockpiles can run out. Supplies can spoil. Systems can fail. But Christ never does.
That’s why our most important survival kit isn’t what we can store in a pantry or closet — it’s who we carry in our hearts. Jesus said in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” No matter what comes — storm, shortage, or struggle — His presence sustains us in ways no earthly preparation can.
So yes, be wise. Keep extra batteries, adequate food stores, extra medications, and first aid on hand. But don’t let preparation become obsession, and don’t leave Jesus out of your survival kit. He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), the Living Water (John 7:38), and the Great Physician (Matthew 9:12). He is our ultimate source of security, hope, and peace. When we have Him, we are prepared not only for tomorrow’s storm, but for eternity.
