Extra Layer of Protection

I’m always experimenting with ways to naturally reduce the weeds that want to take over my flower beds. My latest method has me carrying unbleached coffee filters and used coffee grounds out to the yard every morning. I push back the pine straw mulch, sprinkle the coffee grounds onto the soil, lay the filter down, then cover it back up with the straw. The coffee enriches the soil, while the filter forms a barrier that keeps weeds from breaking through.

As I worked, it struck me — this is exactly what God does in our lives. His presence enriches our hearts the way coffee enriches the soil. And His Word and Spirit provide a boundary that blocks the bad — the negative, the discouraging, the destructive — from taking root.

Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” A relationship with Christ both protects and nourishes. He guards us against the weeds of sin and despair while filling our souls with joy and strength.

Just like my flower beds flourish with a little extra care, our lives bloom when we allow God to be our daily barrier and covering. His protection doesn’t mean weeds will never try to sprout, but it does mean they don’t have to take over.

Let’s choose to layer our hearts with His truth each day, so the beauty He plants in us can grow strong, healthy, and full of life.
