Spiritual Warnings

My dad called later than he normally would in the evening. As soon as I answered, I heard his smoke alarm blaring in the background. He said he couldn’t get it to go off. There was no smoke, no fire, and no visible danger, but he was afraid to ignore the warning.

My husband went over and took it down, and we’ll replace it tomorrow. After things quieted, I kept thinking about how different it is to heed a warning compared to simply worrying about everything.

Worry can fill our lives with noise that never stops. It keeps us restless and uneasy, even when there’s no real reason for concern. Worry makes us react to every sound and shadow as if danger were waiting around every corner.

A warning, on the other hand, comes with a purpose. God gives us spiritual warnings to protect us, not to disturb our peace. When we sense that quiet nudge in our spirit or feel conviction in our hearts, it is His way of guiding us, not scaring us.

The challenge is learning to tell the difference. Worry is constant and draining. God’s warnings are calm and specific, meant to steer us toward safety. When we stay close to Him, His voice becomes clearer, and we can tell the difference between panic and prompting.

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Isaiah 26:3 also says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

This event reminded me that I don’t have to live with alarms constantly going off in my heart. I only need to stay close enough to God to recognize when He is warning me and when I’m just worrying.
