Strong Spiritual Current

Yesterday afternoon’s clouds gave way to today’s brilliant, cool morning, one that could only be described as a gift for this usually humid corner of Texas. Wrapped in a light jacket, I walked through our small-town park where a creek runs from east to west. The sun was just beginning to rise, sending golden rays over the trees and across the rippling surface of the water.
As I watched the creek, I noticed something unusual. The water on the surface appeared to be moving backward toward me, while the deeper current continued pushing steadily downstream. It fascinated me to realize that what I saw on the surface didn’t tell the whole story. Beneath that calm, shimmering back flow, a powerful unseen force was still moving forward, undeterred by the shifting winds above.
Just like the weather, life can change suddenly. Emotional turbulence can affect the flow of our days and make us feel as though everything is moving in reverse. But deep down, if our spiritual current is anchored in truth, love, and the promises of God, we keep moving forward even when the surface seems to tell a different story. Our foundation, our undercurrent, must come from the One who never changes. A surface wind cannot stop a steady flow that begins from a deeper source.
That is what faith really is—trusting that even when life seems to run in reverse, God’s current beneath it all is carrying us forward. Scripture reminds us, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6–7, NIV).
When life’s surface winds shift and circumstances swirl, take a moment to look deeper. Ask yourself: what is anchoring my current today?
