Unlimited Grace

Though my grandmother’s kitchen was small, big things happened there. Every bowl, pot and tray that came out of her kitchen was filled with good old-fashioned home-style cooking. She measured in pinches, dabs and smidgens. Many dishes originated from the same big wooden bowl of flour that sat on the sideboard next to the stove. Draped in a linen cloth to keep the flies out, it sat ready to serve as the base for pie crusts, dumplings, biscuits and cobblers… Anything that contained a sizable amount of flour began in that bowl. She always began with a gentle punch of her fist to open a pocket in the center of the flour. An egg, milk or oil was added to her handmade depression and given a gentle blend with her bare fingers. Then, with the addition of other essential ingredients and a final blend, she would remove the prepped dough from its flowery birthplace and toss the linen cloth back over the bowl. I don’t recall that bowl ever running low of flour as she topped it off regularly with a couple of fresh handfuls from the oversized sack stored in the corner. That basic staple was mashed, blended, molded, cooked and carried to the table by my grandmother, a show of deep love and care for her family.

God’s grace is the basic staple that flows through our lives. It isn’t measured out in pinches, dabs or smidgens, but in heaping spoonfuls. And like my grandmother’s flour, His grace is in unlimited supply.

“In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Ephesians1:7
