Covered

A couple of years ago, I stopped buying bagged mulch for my flower beds. Instead, I began using what God was already providing around me—pine straw. As the pines shed their needles, I rake a little at a time and refurbish my beds. It takes patience and consistency, but it has proven to be both effective and sustaining. The straw not only freshens the look of the beds, but it also keeps weeds from taking root.

That small rhythm of gathering and laying down straw reminds me of the way God covers and protects our lives. His Word and His Spirit are like that natural mulch, given steadily, in season, right where we live. The world offers quick fixes—like bagged mulch—but those fade or run out. What God supplies is ongoing, enough for each day.

Just as the pine straw forms a blanket over the soil to hold back weeds, so the Word of God covers our hearts, guarding us against the encroaching weeds of sin and distraction. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11, NIV). And just as the beds need to be refreshed as more straw falls, our spiritual lives also need daily renewal. The protection doesn’t come from one big application but from continual, faithful layering in God’s word.

When I bend to gather pine straw, I’m reminded that the Lord has already scattered His mercies around me. My part is simply to gather them in and spread them across the soil of my heart, so His love can flourish and the weeds cannot.
