Just Jesus

As I age, I’ve begun to notice how the sun damage from my youth is staking its claim on my skin. Dark patches are showing up in the most visible places—my face, neck, arms, and legs all bear the marks. I am, without question, a card-carrying member of the baby-oil-and-iodine tanning generation. Back then, we greased up and roasted for hours with no sunscreen and no concern for what the future might bring.
Now, in my sixties, I don’t dare work in the yard without a wide-brimmed hat. I lather on sunscreen just to walk to the mailbox. But the reality remains: the damage has already been done. All I can do now is manage the scars that remain.
There are several ways to handle age spots. You can try to cover them with concealer, lighten them with creams, or have them zapped with expensive medical lasers. Each method may temporarily fade the spots, but as long as the skin is exposed without protection, they eventually resurface.
Sin works much the same way. Many of us have exposed our souls to the damage of sin, carelessly living without thought for the days and years to come. At first, sin feels harmless—even fun—but its effects always surface. Like those sunspots, sin leaves behind scars that cannot simply be covered up.
But here’s the good news: while dermatologists may only lighten the scars of the skin, Jesus completely removes the stains of the soul. On the Cross, He paid the price in full and rose again three days later, securing victory over sin and death forever. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7).
When we confess, repent, and accept Him as Lord and Savior, our sins are not just faded or managed—they are erased. As Psalm 103:12 declares: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
Even better, the more we expose ourselves to the Son, the more protection we find. His light doesn’t harm—it heals. His presence teaches us to make wise choices, strengthens us against temptation, and clothes us in grace. Unlike sunscreen or wide-brimmed hats, we need no barrier between ourselves and Christ. We are covered not by our own efforts, but by the blood of the Lamb.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
