Refined

I bent down to pick up a piece of sea glass gleaming among the shells. Once, it had been part of something whole—a bottle, maybe, or a jar. But somewhere along the way, it was shattered. The sharp edges that once could cut had been softened by years of tumbling in the surf. What the ocean didn’t discard, it refined.
I held that small piece of glass in my hand and thought about how much it reminded me of life. None of us make it through without being broken in some way. We’re cracked by disappointment, loss, or regret. Sometimes, we’re tossed by waves we never saw coming. But God—just like the sea—keeps working on us, turning us over and over in His grace until what was once jagged becomes something He can use to reflect His light.
When I look at sea glass, I see proof that time and pressure in the hands of the Creator can transform brokenness into beauty. The piece no longer looks like what it once was, but it’s become something better—something softened, weathered, and full of quiet grace.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)
Maybe you’ve felt the waves lately. Maybe you’ve been tumbled by life’s currents. Don’t lose heart. The same God who shaped the sea shapes you too. And one day, what once felt like breaking will be revealed as becoming.
Yes, I have – felt the waves.
