Shield of Favor

Lake Steinhagen is dotted with Cypress trees. While they ring the shallow waters adjacent to the shoreline in congested stands, my favorites are the ones that survive all alone mid lake. It is as though they are flaunting their strength amongst rough waters. What sets the Cypress apart from other trees? What gives it the hidden strength to thrive where other trees would quickly die? Its foundation is anything but stable, but it is perfectly made and suited for the place it finds itself planted. What sets it apart?
Cypress trees emit an oily resin that makes the wood resistant to decay. Not only is the Cypress water-resistant, but repellent to most insects as well. These characteristics allow the Cypress to thrive where other trees cannot. This oily resin, combined with a soft ringed heart, sets the Cypress apart from other trees making it valuable and versatile.
As Christians, we are often called to stand apart from others. We must thrive where God places us, even if we must stand alone in the midst of rough waters. We are covered with the favor of God. It shields us from a decaying world.
“For You bless the righteous, O Lord; You cover him with favor as with a shield.”
Psalm 5:13
