Signs

If you’ve ever driven across Texas, you know that the speed limits can change faster than you expect. One moment you’re flying down the open road at 75 miles an hour, wind in your hair and endless sky ahead. Then suddenly, a small-town sign appears and the speed drops from 75 to 35 before you’ve even had time to react. If you’re not watching closely, you’ll miss the sign completely.
Life feels like that sometimes. It’s full of sudden shifts, seasons that speed up, slow down, or turn in directions we didn’t plan. The problem isn’t the change itself; it’s how prepared we are to respond. Just like a driver who stays alert to the road ahead, we need to keep our hearts tuned to the signs God places before us.
One way to do that is to hold our plans loosely. When we grip too tightly to what we think should happen, we miss the gentle turns God is guiding us toward. A flexible heart is a peaceful heart. If we can trust that His direction is always good, we won’t fight every change in pace; we’ll learn to move with it.
Life has a rhythm that God alone understands. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” When we learn to trust His timing instead of forcing our own, we begin to see that even the changes in pace are part of His plan, each one leading us exactly where we need to go.
Sometimes the “sign” might be a gentle conviction, a wise word from a friend, or a small stirring in our spirit. Other times it might be a door closing, a change of plans, or a new opportunity opening up. Whatever the case, ignoring those signals can lead us into trouble. But if we stay aware and adjust our pace when God gives direction, we travel the paths of this life a lot more safely and peacefully.
Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
And Isaiah 30:21 assures us, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”
Life’s pace will always change, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but if we stay attentive to the One who knows every turn, we’ll never lose our way.
So true, Paula. I needed this reminder today.
You have an amazing gift with words.
