Some Storms Never Come

Recently, I was on a girl’s trip to the beach. From the balcony of our condo, I looked out over the ocean and saw a thunderstorm raging in the distance. Lightning flashed again and again. It seemed certain that the storm was headed our way. We talked about changing our plans, worried we might get caught in the downpour.
But an hour later, we were still waiting. The storm that looked so threatening simply dissolved and never reached us.
Isn’t that just like life? We often see the “storm” on the horizon—an uncertain diagnosis, a financial concern, a relationship struggle—and fear grips us. We wonder what tomorrow will bring. We play out the worst scenarios in our minds. And yet many times, the storm we fear never comes at all.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Worrying about what might happen only steals today’s sunshine.
And even when storms do reach us, God reminds us of His peace. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
That day at the beach reminded me that my fears about the future do not hold power over me—God does. He is the One who knows whether the storm will come, and if it does, He will walk with me through it.
So instead of living in dread of what tomorrow may bring, I can rest in the sunlight of today, trusting the One who commands both the calm and the storm.
