Dunes

The dunes at Crystal Beach stand quietly between the Gulf and the homes beyond them. They’re not flashy. Most people hardly notice them. They aren’t there to impress anyone. They simply stand watch.
From a distance they look like ordinary mounds of sand held together by sea oats, driftwood, broken shells, and whatever else the tide has carried in. As I walked by them this morning, I noticed bits of trash tangled in the grass—a faded plastic bottle, weathered scraps left behind by the sea. But I also noticed treasures: beautiful shells, smooth pieces of driftwood, and things someone had accidentally left behind. The dunes didn’t seem to distinguish between what was discarded and what was delightful. They simply gathered whatever the tide delivered and, over time, it all became part of the barrier that would help protect the homes behind them when the storms came. I couldn’t help but wonder if that’s how God builds our lives.
None of us wake up one day with steadfast faith. It is formed one grain at a time. A quiet morning in His Word. A prayer whispered when no one else knows we’re hurting. A painful mistake that teaches us wisdom. An unexpected kindness that reminds us God sees us. Years spent serving others. Sweet memories of His faithfulness. Seasons of waiting that deepen our trust. Even the failures we’d rather forget become places where His grace shines brightest.
Like the dunes, our lives collect both treasures and debris. There are joyful moments we cherish and painful memories we’d gladly throw away. There are victories that strengthen our confidence and scars that humble our hearts. Yet in the hands of a loving God, neither is wasted. He has a way of gathering every experience—the beautiful and the broken, the chosen and the unwanted—and using them to build something stronger than we ever imagined.
Then one day the storm comes. The winds howl, the waves rise, and life crashes against us with unexpected force. That’s when we discover God has been building protective dunes all along. The Scriptures we’ve hidden in our hearts steady our feet. The prayers we’ve prayed strengthen our faith. The lessons we’ve learned through failure make us wiser. The memories of God’s faithfulness remind us He has carried us before and He will carry us again. What once looked like random pieces of a life become a testimony of God’s careful design.
Perhaps the greatest miracle isn’t that God keeps storms from coming. It’s that long before they arrive, He has already been building the dunes.
