Storm on the Horizon

God has always spoken most clearly to my heart at the beach.

The Gulf lay before me like a lullaby. Gentle waves rolled onto the shore with quiet confidence, each one surrendering itself to the sand before slipping back into the sea. The warm breeze brushed across my face, shorebirds skimmed the water’s edge, and for a little while the world seemed wonderfully still. Then, almost unnoticed at first, I heard it. Thunder growled like an angry dog somewhere beyond the horizon.

When I lifted my eyes, jagged streaks of lightning tore across charcoal skies, briefly illuminating curtains of rain that blurred the line between heaven and sea. It was obvious the wind had churned the Gulf into foaming whitecaps. Once gentle water became a restless giant. Yet where I sat, the tide continued its quiet rhythm. Children laughed. Shorebirds searched the shoreline. Sunshine warmed my face. Peace and fury shared the same ocean.

It made me wonder how many storms begin beyond the horizon of our vision. Storms don’t suddenly appear when we notice them. They’ve often been forming long before they come into view. Isn’t that true of our lives as well?

Before someone seeks help, loses hope, or quietly whispers, “I can’t do this anymore,” dark clouds have often been gathering for weeks, months on the horizon. We simply couldn’t see them.

How often do we assume someone has the perfect life because all we can see is their peaceful shoreline? We admire the family picture, the smile across the pew, the cheerful greeting, never realizing that somewhere beyond the horizon of our vision, thunder has already begun to growl.

Yesterday, the storm never reached the beach where I sat. I remained in sunshine while someone farther down the coast was undoubtedly seeking shelter. Two completely different realities existed on the same body of water at the very same moment. Life is often like that.

Perhaps that’s why God calls us to be patient with one another… to offer grace before judgment, kindness before criticism, and compassion before conclusions. We never know what hidden storm someone is praying through. The next time you’re tempted to believe someone has an easy life because their shoreline looks calm, remember to look beyond the horizon.

There may be a storm you simply cannot see.

May we become people who offer shelter before we’re ever asked.

After all, God sees every horizon—even the ones hidden from us.
